Storyline

A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia, the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh, the new head of the Centre of National Security, questions Bond's actions and challenges the relevance of MI6 led by M. Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny and Q to help him seek out Madeleine Swann, the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White, who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks.

A Treat for Veteran Fans

Spectre may be receiving mixed reviews within the community, but I believe that this is simply credited to the fact that Spectre differs from the other Craig Bond films like Casino Royale and Skyfall. This latest installment, in my own opinion, tips the hat to the old Bond-style of action that we loved in most of the earlier films. Granted it is not as brash as say Goldfinger, with character names such as Pussy Galore. But it doesn't exactly fit into the box of Daniel Craig's films either. This movie tells a story. It isn't just nice suits, and cars with beautiful woman surrounded by flying bullets in front of the canvas of a massive explosion (even if this film does boast the record for the largest stunt explosion in movie history). No, this movie gives us some nice character development. With a nod to the many years of Bond that has preceded Craig. It was a nice feeling to think that as a Bond fan across the the entire Franchise, that I was privy to some knowledge and little Easter eggs that maybe some of the newly converted fans (those that have joined the agency only since Craig assumed the 00-status) may not have caught on too. The only downside I could see anyone pointing out with this film is maybe the length of the film. This film could be reviewed as a rather long one, especially to those who might lose interest trying to involve themselves in a story that started back in the days of Connery. But if you are a fan of the entire franchise spanning across all 24 films, maybe even some of Flemming's original novel, then Spectre is a must see.

The film is based on the real life story of Don Piper, who, driving home from a minister's conference in 1989, crashed into a semi-truck which had crossed into his lane. Presumed dead, Piper lay on a bed covered in tarp, when a passing minister who had also been at the conference came to pray over Piper's body and sang to him, with Piper soon joining in. His arm had been severed and his leg was barely attached to his body, forcing Piper to endure a long and brutal recovery, which included being bed bound for thirteen months. Piper claims to have seen Heaven while he was unconscious, and believes he was on his way there before being pulled back to Earth. Piper has said he was infuriated at God, as his injuries meant he had to endure incredible pain before eventually regaining his mobility. After suffering in silence, he wrote the book which this film is based on, and became an accomplished public speaker. At two different screenings, I had two good conversations with a good guy about the strangeness of M. Night Shyamalan's career. His first mainstream films Sixth Sense and Unbreakable really both dealt with mental issues and powers in a powerful way. We also can't forgot the famous Newsweek magazine proclaiming Shyamalan as "The Next Spielberg" which now just looks foolish. With Signs coming in 2002 from him and The Village in 2004, both reached a level of strangeness that I wasn't fully into and this wasn't on the same as level Sixth Sense or Unbreakable surely. Still I support these movies more than most people. It's really his films Lady in the Water in 2006 or The Happening in 2008 where I got off the Shyamalan train. Both suffer from using stars like Bryce Dallas Howard and Mark Wahlberg improperly and I still say The Happening has one of the worst twists ever. It's just hard to believe a guy can create some of the most interesting films around and also some of the biggest disasters. His new film The Visit is mind-blowing for all the wrong reasons.

A middle age mother (Kathryn Hahn) has a falling out with her parents with no contact with them and after she has two kids of her own, she decides to send Rebecca (Olivia De Jonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) to finally meet their grandparents for the first time. Once they get there, these are not the grandparents we expected.

The point Shyamalan is really trying to make is that going to your grandparents house is not usually an exciting experience. Rebecca is an inspiring filmmaker who brings the nicest cameras to document her experience which just sounds like the dullest film you could put together. The film wants to evoke some humor by Tyler who is really the typical mischievous little brother character and he's also an inspiring rapper. Acting by both of them is surely not an issue but still nothing special nor do they make their characters likable. The writing has humor in it which really makes you question the direction to the film because it's not at all marketed as a horror comedy. Even though it is marketed as a horror film, it does not have enough killers or a lot of horror elements. The movie just seems lost on direction and it's off-putting as to it's tone through every act.

The grandparents are the main asset to the plot but they are also the biggest downfall. Again, the acting by Deanna Dungan as Doris Jamison and Peter McRobbie as John Jamison are not an issue but the script is a problem. There is a scene with some really bad nudity and my friend said sitting next to me "That wasn't eye candy." They are basically old people who don't do a lot of anything and for some reason the idea of pooping (yes) is a plot point to them which just falls back to the bad direction. Once you get to the twist which is really uninteresting and pretty basic, many plot holes comes into place. It's never good when you have so many questions after a film like this one.

For a story using found footage and using pretty much one setting, location should be somewhat important you would think. It's an old house and the characters only venture out into town rarely. These kids must be so bored in this house! By what the twist is though, so much more could be done with the characters outside of the house. This twist is made to have somewhat of an investigation type plot and could introduce more characters which is another thing it's needs but when you only have a budget of five million, money has to play a factor somehow.

Even with The Visit being a screening, the audience I sat with has some strong reactions to how tiresome this movie was. Guys beyond me were bashing the movie right from the beginning. My friend whispered "We are not even an hour into this" and "This really needs to be over." People two rows in front of us picked up the twist very early on and some people left early. Sure, this wasn't a well-behaved audience but they all gave an accurate reaction to this movie. We were all pretty much done with this very early into it.

M. Night Shyamalan has now hit a bottom that I thought he had already reached. The Visit has really some nice ideas and has the plot to be scary but the results are not there and the movie is ludicrous. With that small budget, The Visit is surely going to make back it's money but this should be on the list of the worst films of the year. Actually it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It is surely the worst for Shyamalan to date. It is just basically the worst at everything.

This is a great film. The detail and the effort that been put in here is superb and it's wonderful to see.

Each of the actors is well chosen, credible and presents their chosen character in convincing manner.

The actors that play Dre and Ice-Cube are particularly compelling, but it seems wrong to overlook the portrayal of Easy-E.

This is explosive stuff straight out of the blocks and it never feels slow. It's a long film too, but it keeps you right there. I went to see it in the cinema with my wife and she'd just worked a night shift - she didn't fall asleep and she thought she probably would. That is a pretty good test for a movie.

The menacing figure of Shug Knight comes right off the screen too. The drama is both incredible but so real.

Laced within this film are real messages too - freedom of speech messages, racial discrimination messages, police brutality messages - which are really important because they were and are part of our times.

The big message is though - these five guys came from nowhere, a place where there is less than nothing to share - but with their own gifts, their creativity, their musicality - they left their mark on the world. It just shows that, it's always there waiting to happen, something new and unexpected, out of nowhere. The political elite can't ever stop that, it can't be smothered.

This is a great film that holds the torch for the power of creativity and self belief - the ability to over come it all.

Final mention - easy to overlook - this film is bringing NWA to a whole new generation who don't know about them. After the film was over I was waiting for my wife (bathroom) and I asked this young guy if he remembered any of the events he'd seen on the screen. He shook his head and said 'No, I'm only 16'.

Remembering the TV show, just barely, I remember I liked Illya a little better than Napoleon. That hasn't changed in this far better version. This movie is a joy and I either smiled or laughed through the whole thing. There is no way they're not making a sequel.

Guy Ritchie's direction is assured and far more clever and entertaining than his current rivals. And his eye for casting, assuming it was his doing, is impeccable. I particularly appreciated Alicia Vikander who was dreamy enough in Ex Machina. Here she does a little dance in one scene that went indelibly into my do not erase memory.

Cavill and Hammer make an unexpectedly good team. And though I was a little partial to Hammer's performance, Cavill has a flair for comedy that I haven't known about. Oddly enough, Hugh Grant who appears briefly, is a proved asset but seems a little out of place.

All in all though this is a fun movie and not to be missed.

Has Some Great Moments, But Takes Too Much Time to Become Interesting, Long Enough to Make Us Not Care

There's probably some salvageable remnants left in Fox's previous attempts to bring one of Marvel's most popular superhero team, FANTASTIC FOUR, to the big screen. That's maybe what Fox thinks in pushing this new adaptation, given how franchises keep being rebooted and resurrected these days, assuming either lighter or darker takes, to pull away themselves from the shadows of their previous (most often, forgettable) forms. The latter is more evident with this film, as Director Josh Trank, puts a darker spin to it, employing a grittier feel to its plot. While that is true and recognizable, there's no denying of its desperate efforts to emulate its Marvel predecessors. Unfortunately, though, neither, succeeds. If it's any a consolation, Trank has assembled a group of actors that are all naturally charming, you would find anything messed-up they're in, tolerable.

The spotlight is cast upon young genius, Reed Richards, at the beginning of the film, working on an experiment that attempts to construct a teleportation device. It was hardly a success as the object they've sent to who-knows-where, never returned. Seven years later, now teenage Reed (Miles Teller) is again trying his luck on the same experiment. The attempt yields a better result but is still dismissed as a magic trick by his high school teacher, but not by Dr. Franklin Storm, who at that moment, is drawn with utter interest to Richard's experiments. The meeting brings Richard's feet to Baxter Institute where he is joined by Storm's daughter, Sue (Kate Mara), his son, Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan), and Viktor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell), to work in completing a larger and more advanced version of Richard's device. The success of their effort prompts their team to send all of them four to their target alternate universe, but the consequence is far worse than they could imagine.

It's easy to dismiss Trank's Fantastic Four as an unfortunate victim of superhero fatigue that emerges in the wake of the continuous influx of superhero movies inundating the big screen, but you can't shrug off its fatal narrative flaws that include unfocused pace and bland character developments. The latter may have been completely covered by the actors playing the two-dimensional characters, but expositional defects keep sending them to becoming something the audience might find hard to care about. Perhaps its the ill-contrived rationales behind how all the often-sense-deprived proceedings work, that keeps the film constructing a form, worth-of- attention, or the forced CGI-gimmicks that strip the sense off the moment's supposedly strong sentiments, that hampers its spectators' ability to absorb its message, and thus, feel that the dangers these characters are about to face, is real. Either way, it's difficult to care, much less find reasons why we still should.

If it's any consolation, the final battle of this film,sparks hope. But who knows who else is up with eagerness to see it when the rest of the film strikes more than enough to make the audience not wait for any longer. 5/10

This Is What An Action Film Should Be

I saw this film on an IMAX screen and I'm glad I did. Although IMAX cameras were not used in the filming, I think the larger screen creates a more immersive experience and the sound was spectacular. But this film would be great in any format.

"Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" is one of the best action films I have ever seen. The story is clever and action packed. The photography is amazing and the music is fantastic.

Much has been made of the stunt work, especially that done by Tom Cruise himself. It did not disappoint. And the action and chase sequences are as exciting as any I have seen.

We can thank the writing for the well-defined and engaging characters. Some Bond films have villains that are rather cartoonish, but in MI:RN the danger feels real, helping to drive the suspense.

The female lead, Rebecca Ferguson, deserves special mention. Her portrayal of Ilsa Faust is a wonderful blend of intelligence, beauty and strength and definitely one of the best in any action film. I can only hope she shows up in the next installment. some of the credit goes to the writers who created the character.

In all, this film offers everything you want in an action film and deserves a "10" for its place in the genre.

Shreya Saran; who is most glamorous heroine from South( remember Shivaji- the boss-Rajnikanth-Shankar?) has done role of typical Indian housewife.Tanu is role of brutal and tough cop and her husband; who is a big businessman-role played by total underacting and balanced work by our marvelous actor RajatKapoor- all steal the show. We have shortage of such spine chilling suspense crime thrillers in Bollywood as last was 'Wednesday'. In Hollywood Alfred Hichckok has given so many spine-chilling thrillers and I do recollect Edward Fox's 'The day of the jackal' and Bruce Willis+Rachard Gere in 'Jackal .'The executive decision'- was also such spine chilling thriller and we do recollect 'Taken-1,2,3,' and 'Unknown etc. The year 2015 has been so luck for the cinema viewers that we have received so marvelous and wonderful movies throughout the year and this is one of them.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a 2015 Indian rom-com directed by Anand L. Rai and is the sequel to the 2011 film Tanu Weds Manu, also directed by Rai. Written by Himanshu Sharma, Tanu Weds Manu Returns stars Kangana Ranaut, R. Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, and Deepak Dobriyal in the pivotal roles. The movie is set four years after the dramatic turn of events of Tanu Weds Manu wherein the seemingly incompatible duo of Manu and Tanu had managed to get hitched, overcoming all odds. Manu and Tanu now find themselves on the brink of separation. As with all things life, the passion has subsided and it's replaced by monotony and solitude. Their marriage seems more like a burden and a formality than a symbol of mutual love and respect. Their decisions are no longer driven by love but by their own egos. And yet, whether they want to believe it or not, all is not lost. And, so, they must both suffer, for although life is a great teacher, alas, it teaches the things the hard way. As a scrutiny of the institution of marriage, Tanu Weds Manu Returns reminds this critic of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors: White (1994) and Kangana Ranaut's performance of a seemingly selfish, inconsiderate wife of Julie Delpy's turn in the very film.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is the kind of cinema that the Indian masses crave for. It's a formula that just cannot fail in a diverse and colorful country like India. Indians love to celebrate. The dozen or two festivals are just not enough. Festivities are an innate part of our lives. And marriage functions are the grandest of them all. For us, marriage is just not a union of two individuals but it's an alliance of two families. It's an occasion that gets everyone excitedâ€"be it the children, the young, or the oldâ€"for it is perceived as the greatest celebration of life. In short, the marriages are a singularly viable business. For Bollywood, it's a bankable subject like no other. Some of the biggest commercial hits in the history of Hindi cinema revolved around the theme of marriage. Films such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! (1994) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) exploited the Indian sentimentality for the traditions and rituals associated with marriage particularly well. While Tanu Weds Manu was a testament to the efficacy of very fabric of marriage in binding us together, Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a gentle reminder of its fallibility.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a non-stop entertainer from start to finish, but, in order to fully enjoy the film, one needs to be credulous enough to believe anything and everything that's on offer. In other words, the viewer must be willing to suspend the disbelief concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Once the viewer makes this compromise, Tanu Weds Manu Returns will prove to be a roller-coaster of a ride. The film certainly shows us the dark side of marriage but it does so without appearing too grim. Marriage is like any other partnership but sometimes the patriarchal mindset can make the male partner behave in a rather chauvinistic manner. Now, that's fine as long as the fairer sex is willing to bend but the modern Indian woman can be every bit as feministic in her ways—it will certainly set the two of them on a collision path. In Tanu Weds Manu Returns, we witness how a free-spirited girl and her pragmatic husband fail to meet each other's expectations. How a lack of mutual understanding and respect takes them on the brink of divorce. How young couples forget that a marriage is never "all take and no give."

Overall, Tanu Weds Manu Returns offers truckloads of entertainment and can be enjoyed by one and all. Its witty dialogues and crude humor immensely add to its entertainment value. The movie offers an undercurrent of social commentary which is quite relevant to the modern Indian society. It's also serves as a critique of the institution of marriage. But, it shouldn't be mistaken for anything more than what it really isâ€"a sophisticated example of commercial escapism in cinema. Riding high on the success of Queen (2013), Kangana Ranaut once again carries a film on her able shoulders with her essaying not one but two contrasting albeit powerful caricatures (both of which are a treat to watch). She is well supported by the rest of the cast. There's no denying the fact that Kangana is the most bankable actress in Bollywood today. She is no longer the troubled prodigy she once was and has certainly come of age as an actress par-excellence as far as Hindi cinema is concerned. Tanu Weds Manu Returns has its share of flaws and it relies heavily on time-tested gimmicks but that doesn't stop it from serving its purpose, that of entertaining the masses. Recommended!

Very watchable suspense with great acting

KK's acting is superb and steals the show. The others are also usually good (with occasional overacting). I had never noticed Tisca Chopra earlier but she does a pretty good job in her limited role. Overall, characterisations are pretty good.

Neat story. So far, I am unable to find a plothole.

Many elements in the movie are portrayed realistically, with minor details like the behaviour of a hotel manager also taken into consideration.

Overall, I liked the execution of the movie, a rare murder mystery from Bollywood. Recommended watch.

A Potpourri of Vestiges Review: Dibankar Banerjee's dark, sprawling period piece oozing with suspense and film noir elements

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is based on the popular sleuth character created by the Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Neeraj Kabi, Anand Tiwari, Swastika Mukherjee, Meiyang Chang, and Divya Menon in major roles. The movie is set in 1942-43 Calcutta (now Kolkata) with the carefully chosen World War II backdrop in an attempt to resonate the ever bustling tempo of the city of joy with the chaos and hysteria of war. But, did the attempt succeed? Well, we will certainly try to find an answer to this and many other pertinent questions during the course of this article. But, before we do that, let's first focus on the plot details and various other filmmaking aspects.

The title "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" in itself gives a lot away without leaving much to the imagination—irrespective of whether one is already acquainted with Byomkesh Bakshi or not. There's no denying that Byomkesh Bakshi is a cult figure but it's nowhere as famous as say a Sherlock Holmes or a James Bond. Hence the smartly chosen title "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" and not just "Byomkesh Bakshy!" or "Byomkesh!"! The problem with nondescript titles based on relatively lesser known fictional characters is that they defy reasonable marketing strategies to attract the mass audiences. By why change Bakshi to Bakshy? And why use an exclamation mark with the name? Well, according to Dibankar Banerjee, these playful little adjustments have been made to make it more adventurous than generic. Clearly, Banerjee doesn't merely seem interested in adapting the stories of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. He has his eyes set on a bigger and a more challenging goal: to transform pulp into cinema while adding his own creative touches in the process and simultaneously ensuring that the spirit of the source material remains intact.

"Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" is targeted towards a new audience and is bound to disappoint the purists (they can still find solace in the 1993 Television series telecasted on Doordarshan). However, Byomkesh Bakshi enthusiasts can still enjoy the film if they choose to approach it with an open mind. Banerjee seems to have a penchant for making dark films like "Shanghai" and "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!". Made in the tradition of Hollywood whodunits, "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" is a richly textured detective story with a multilayered narrative. And while Dibankar may refuse to acknowledge it, the film noir influence just cannot be overlooked and is not limited to the presence of femme fatales and private eyes. 

It's never a cinch to recreate a certain epoch in history and the fact that Banerjee and team meticulously reconstructed the 1940s Calcutta not only speak volumes about their commitment but actually help orchestrate an enchanting mise-en-scène that adds great detail to a sprawling period piece like "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" Add to this a thick plot, actors who can act with conviction, some brilliantly crafted dialogue, thrash metal music, Leone's signature camera movements, Welles' characteristic use of shadows and silhouettes, and shades of Tarantino-esque violence. Voila! We have crafted a palpable atmosphere that will hold the viewer in a vice- like grip until the end credits began to roll.

Banerjee's film is not original by any stretch of imagination, for he has borrowed ideas from various other filmmakers. But, there is no shame in borrowing ideas as long as one can concoct them into something unique. One of the greatest merits of the film is that it brilliantly serves the purpose of a suspense thriller. Some viewers may complain that the film is a bit predictable at times but the truth is that it keeps the viewer guessing throughout—the whole truth and the real motives of the various characters aren't revealed until the very end. There is a subtle difference between suspense and mystery and "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" for the most part falls in the former category (yes, there is mystery but the suspense element is stronger). So, there's no denying that Banerjee and team do succeed in their endeavor! 

Overall, "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" can best be described as a marriage of commercial and experimental filmmaking. It is entertainment galore but not at the expense of creative freedom. In the context of contemporary Hindi cinema, "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" is nothing short of a monumental achievement. And those who think that Hindi cinema is not good enough to make great suspense thrillers anymore (Of course, the great Vijay Anand was the pioneer of the genre in Hindi cinema) certainly need to watch this film. Dibakar Banerjee needs to be congratulated for eliciting worthy performances from his entire cast of actors. Sushant Singh Rajput seems to have finally got the big break that he has been waiting for. Again his portrayal of Bandyopadhyay's sleuth may not satisfy the purists but nonetheless he manages to make his mark. Amidst a series of memorable performances, it's Neeraj Kabi's portrayal of Dr. Guha that stands first among equals. Another performance that deserves a special mention is that Swastika Mukherjee as Anguri Devi. The movie has some pacing issues and it occasionally tries to purposefully misdirect the viewer but despite the flaws it proves to be quite an enthralling experience. While the movie is bound to disappoint the hardcore Byomkesh Bakshi enthusiasts, it has all the elements to satisfy the masses and the classes alike. If the movie does well at the box office (and it most certainly will), a sequel may be just around the corner . Highly recommended!

American-German action film directed by Aleksander Bach and written by Skip Woods (who also wrote the original Hit-man film) and Michael Finch. It is based on the Hit-man video game series, developed by IO Interactive, and its main character, a mysterious assassin known only as Agent 47. The film stars Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware, Zachary Quinto, Ciarán Hinds, Thomas Kretschmann, and Angelababy.

The plot of the movie focuses about an assassin who teams up with a woman to help her find her father and uncover the mysteries of her ancestry. Together, they aim to take down the leader of Syndicate International, a terrorist group based in Singapore.

Believe me from start to finish this movie was Absolutely Breathtaking.

A Fun Dramedy

I'm not a film critic or a film connoisseur of any kind; I rate a film based upon how much I enjoyed it and if it would be worth the money to shell out at the theater. With that in mind, I gave this film a 9/10.

The best way to describe this movie is Bourne meets CHUCK (the TV Series). It is a Dramedy at it finest - it isn't straight up drama and it isn't a comedy, but it has a nice mix of both, leaning a bit more toward the comedy side of things. 

I couldn't stop smiling throughout the movie; it was well paced, the character development was good (don't expect anything too deep), the comedy was well timed, and the action was exciting. For a lighthearted film, there were a few moments that definitely pulled on the heartstrings. 

If you're looking for a fun movie to watch, and especially if you're a fan of CHUCK (think of this as an R rated CHUCK), then I highly recommend this move.

I do not understand all of the raving reviews this movie has received. Maybe it's because everyone jumps on the Marvel bandwagon and won't believe that they could produce anything this bad. With bad acting, unoriginality, and long stretches of the movie that almost made me fall asleep in the theatre, this was one of the worst movies I have ever paid to see in theatres. Paul Rudd and his group of friends were the only thing that made this movie bearable. This just proves that Marvel can create a steaming pile of sh*t and people will still love it. Just as lil wayne can rap about defecating on a toilet and make millions. My poor expectations from the trailer were met.
